Liminal
It’s a whale lost in a summer forest on a misty morning
It’s an ocean of tears collected fearlessly by our dearest friend, whose tender embrace repairs and soothes
It’s the immense blue, shouting into our eyes and leaving us drowsy and with a mild taste of honey on our lips
It’s the foam, left behind by the tide, tracing the line between the shore and the dream
“Liminal” refers to being at the edge of a boundary, in the in-between — a space suspended between two phases or moments. From the Latin limen, meaning threshold, it evokes a state of transition, of possibility.
The creation of Liminal stems from a clear artistic desire: to compose strong, grounded melodies that become invitations — pretexts for musicians to gather, converse, and co-create.
Liminal quartet is led by Marco Di Bari on guitar, Joshua Leblanc-Demers on drums, Benjamin Jaton on the bass and Lucien Palak on saxophone.
Benjamin Jaton is a double bass player, improviser and composer active on the Swiss music scene. He studied at the EJMA in Lausanne with Pierre-Francois Massy and Pierangelo Crescenzio. His musical practice includes improvisation, from jazz to sound experimentation. In his compositions, he explores the dynamics of playing within flexible structures that shape the musicians choices, creating a terrain for negotiation and agreement.
Joshua LeBlanc-Demers is a drummer and composer blending jazz, contemporary classical, rock, and improvised music. A McGill graduate with honors, he studied under John Hollenbeck and premiered his piece Rhus Typhina with Jazz Orchestra I. Now pursuing a master’s in contemporary jazz composition in Bern, he studies with Django Bates and others. His work spans large ensemble compositions and intimate small group writing, marked by versatility, sensitivity, and a distinct artistic voice.
Lucien Palak is a saxophonist, improviser, composer, arranger, bandleader from France. Moving to Bern in 2022, Lucien earned his bachelor’s degree in Jazz Saxophone at the HKB. He is also involved in the Jugendjazzorchestra led by Benjamin Weidekamp and Michael Haves since 2 years where he plays the first tenor chair as well as clarinet and flute. Currently, Lucien is pursuing a Master’s degree in Composition under the teaching of Ralph Alessi and Stefan Schultze while being a demanded sideman in smaller formations. You can hear him in bands such as the Alberto Santamaria 4tet, Unda 4tet as well as in his own band: the Lucien Palak 4tet.
