Laama!
These words were spoken by the American drummer Jim Black about the still young band, which has been playing and experimenting together since autumn 2023.
Although the term “smooth jazz” was used, it probably doesn’t fully capture the genre the ensemble is aiming for. At least not in the general understanding of the style. The compositions of Lasse Ammann could be described as Nordic jazz with more traditional American influences.
Lasse Ammann, who has been living in Finland for some time (but is currently residing in Bern), draws inspiration from bands like the Icelandic ADHD and American artists such as Steve Grossman and Bruce Hornsby. This creates a blend where calm, Nordic, melodic sounds collide with traditional straight-ahead jazz and more pop-oriented sounds.
“When the music is simply easy-going, beautiful, and without pretension and pandering… that’s what ‘smooth’ jazz is supposed to sound like ! ”
